2015 Reunion Summary

by Paul Daraska, Reunion Committee Chairman

If you missed this reunion ,  you missed one of  our best. Even though we had a smaller than usual group, everyone had a good time. The location was great and the weather co-operated with the event. The hotel was great and the staff was wonderful.

On the first day of the reunion {Monday September 14th 2015) we opened the hospitality room and set up refreshments and snacks.

At 6:00 P.M     we gathered in the hospitality room for our welcome reception. It was fun to renew old acquaintances, and welcome first time crew members. Dee Dee and Larry did their usual 50/50 drawing. After the reception groups gathered for cocktails and/or dinner on the Riverwalk

While at the hotel   we met many sailors also having a reunion from the USS Bon Homme Richard (an Aircraft Carrier) and a Marine group having a reunion.

On the second day of the reunion we met at 8:30 for our bus tour.

Our first stop was to a Vietnam  memorial.   It was a very touching experience.

Our next stop was to the Alamo,  where our tour guide explained the history of the Alamo and Texas. We spent a good deal of time there

Then on to lunch at Bud Jones restaurant,   a local favorite. When finished with lunch we proceeded to Mission San Jose  and to San Fernando Cathedral . Finally a barge tour  on the River Walk.

Wednesday started at 8:30 again for a bus trip to Fredericksburg, home of the

Pacific War Museum and Admiral Nimitz .  It was an interesting place.

There is a plaque dedicated to the Surfbird there .  Some of us stopped for lunch

and some shopping.  It was a full day.

Thursday the ladies had a luncheon  and did some shopping organized by Dee Dee.

The guys gathered in the hospitality room for some sea stories .

An  audit of the books was conducted by Bruce Stevens, Larry McMaster and John Childers

Also an audit of banquet finances was also conducted.

Total Income         $3990.00

Total Expenses      $3340.96

Net Gain                  $649.04

Our business meeting was opened by Paul Daraska

John Childers was elected Vice-President, with Paul Daraska returning as President.

Tom Dannatt will continue to serve as Secretary/Treasurer.

It was decided to pursue for our 2017 reunion a cruise (3-4 days) out of New Orleans, probably in October/November to avoid hurricanes.

Thursday Evening we had our farewell banquet . We had a fine dinner. Dee Dee gave a presentation on obtaining the surfbird logs in Washington D.C. and how the Surfbird is now on the Agent Orange list. Thank you Larry and DeeDee.

We gathered for a group picture on a stairway in the hotel  . And proceeded to the cocktail lounge. For farewell drinks.
